Sarahi Uribe: Is Arizona to Blame?
July 29, 2010In recent months, many have blamed, boycotted, and blasphemed Arizona for SB 1070. However, it is not all state law that is to blame. A few years ago, the United States Justice Department passed 287 G, a statute that puts immigration control in the hands of local police. Would SB 1070 be possible without these deeper, more established roots?Greenpeace: Making BP Disappear
July 29, 2010The headline of the New York Times today says "On the surface, Gulf oil spill is vanishing fast," but as we all know, that's just the surface. Wouldn't it be nice if the spill really was disappearing--and with it the company that caused it? Greenpeace activists in England are doing just that--or at least, doing their best. Check it out.The Good Example
July 28, 2010The economy's still struggling, and millions of Americans are desperate for work. And there are some people who are stuck with an even harder time than most. "Have you ever been convicted of a felony?" If you have to check "yes" next to that question, you've probably just said "no" to a job. In Connecticut, a group of activists decided to challenge the question. Sam Alcoff and intern Rodolfo Piana went to visit and to hear their stories.Sarahi Uribe, Felons & Jobs, and War Funding

July 28, 2010Coming on the eve of another war funding vote, many wondered if the the memos leaked by Wikileaks on the details of the Afghanistan deployment might make a difference. At the first test, the answer appears to have been no. The House approved $33 billion for a 30,000-troop escalation in Afghanistan this week and in doing so took money away from other places it was desperately needed: public schools, green energy and job creation, the lot. 60 percent of Democrats and 93 percent of Republicans think increasing the deficit is just fine when it comes to war.Stand Up New York: Fighting Fracking
July 28, 2010The story of the fight over hydraulic fracturing--hydrofracking or "fracking"--for natural gas in New York contains some familiar villains, it turns out. It was Dick Cheney's Halliburton that discovered the technique, and Cheney's pressure that got it approved by the EPA. And in case we needed to be reminded that it's no more safe than drilling for oil in the Gulf, our friends at Stand Up New York made this little video...Maude Barlow: Running out of Water
July 28, 2010Despite what you learned in science class in school, Maude Barlow says, it is in fact possible for the Earth to be running out of water. Pollution and population are on the rise, and corporations encroach on the water rights of people around the world, fencing off and bottling up a natural resource that should be available to all.Greg Palast: Fighting Toxic Oil Companies
July 28, 2010Last week, Mike Papantonio told us that there was no fund from BP to pay for the oil disaster, and raised some questions about Kenneth Feinberg, the administrator of the damages to Gulf residents. Today investigative journalist Greg Palast answers some of those questions--and raises a few of his own.Maude Barlow, Greg Palast, and Americans with Disabilities

July 27, 2010Events were held across the country Monday to mark the twentieth anniversary of the signing of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act. At a ceremony at the White House, disability rights activists made the point that passing the law was only the start. "Civil rights laws do not self-enforce, " said Marca Bristo, "They only come to life when enlightened citizens...push the envelope."
