John Nichols: Congress Missing On War Debate
Obama might have laid out his reasons for continuing the war in Afghanistan, but The Nation's John Nichols wants us all to remember that the Constitution actually gave Congress the power to make war. Obama might be consistent with his campaign promises to escalate, but, Nichols notes, public opinion has shifted and Congress is better equipped to respond.

Is it any wonder that congress is missing on war debate? Congress is missing on anything and everything that improves the lives of America’s citizens, like HEALTH CARE REFORM, and they are quite willing to allow their (congress’s) constitutionally mandated powers to be used by the president, at his discretion, to make wars. This has been especially obvious when it comes to the president’s frequent declarations of war, and war funding! Our congress is way to busy working for the wealthy who are paying for, (1) either their next election or, (2) their job as a lobbyist, to the government, as soon as they are no longer an official. Oh yes, and don’t let me forget no.(3) taking over as CEO of some mega corporation that depends upon an inside feed line to the government for its survival.
We the people obviously need to come up with a sure fire method of vetting our political contestants before they get elected on merits that, we will find, have nothing to do with their ability to guide this country with sound, and reasonable, decision making.
We are in this mess, as a people, because our elected decision makers have not done the jobs they were elected for. This is the fault of the citizen’s of this country.
This will only be corrected by actions, by the citizens, to protest THEIR demands for change.
