When you think of progressive independent broadcasting, Amy Goodman's name is often the first one that comes to mind. Goodman, longtime host of Democracy Now!, sees journalism as a social justice mission, and has been an inspiration to young journalists and a voice for the oppressed for years.
She has a new book out, Breaking the Sound Barrier
, a collection of her syndicated columns, and she joined Laura in the studio to talk about creating independent media in a corporate world, the responsibility of people in the U.S. to be aware and active in the world, and the broken health care system she faced down recently while dealing with her mother's terminal illness.

The reality is the pundits are simply “tools” to keep the distractions going, and everybody running the show knows that. We’re the only ones who act surprised, and put too much energy into conversations with and about them.
Like Pilger says in his prologue to “The New Rulers of the World”
…”In Europe, the energy and organization are well ahead of the 1960s, rather like the blossoming political awareness of all sorts of people, especially the young. They no longer confuse the ‘distractions’ of elective oligarchies with true politics.”
We’ve got to in the US get beyond the “distractions” these tools get paid to manufacture everyday, and start to see, name and talk about the true politics going on here. The damage is way done.
