President Obama says healthcare is no longer just a moral imperative but a fiscal imperative. And to make the necessary changes he has vowed to fight the lobbyists and special interests. But in the middle of a financial crisis, will healthcare reform happen? And will single payer advocates have a seat at the table?
Monica Sanchez of the Campaign for America's Future, Adam Thompson Senior Health Care Policy Analyst at the Progressive States Network, California Nurses Association member Martha Kuhl, and Dr. Walter Tsou of Physicians for a National Health Program on the Sebelius pick and healthcare reform under Barack Obama.
Also, an interview with Rachel Zaslow, co-founder and director of Earth Birth: A Global Women’s Health Collective. Zaslow, a midwife with a degree in performance studies, has been working to promote safe birth in areas affected by war.
Finally, we speak to Julie Burkhart of ProKanDo in Kansas on Obama's pick to lead the department of Health and Human Services. Writing in RH Reality Check Burkhart notes that, “[Gov. Sebelius] has been a tireless advocate for expanded health care for pregnant women, for comprehensive and medically accurate sexual education and for more accommodating adoption statutes.” But how will she fare in Washington?
