Terry Jones, of Monty Python, on why he's becoming an arms manufacturer. The forecast is good he says. Sales are up. And it doesn't look like growth will slow any time soon. Think about it...by the time you finish watching this the United States will have spent an additional one million dollars in Iraq and Afghanistan. There couldn't be a better time to enter the business of manufacturing cluster bombs, missiles and the like.

Considering his career path it is not surprising. You have to have a sharp comic sense to survive in the trade. His resume makes him a perfect fit.

This does really plead for a discussion about what to do about the international arms trade, even in small arms. The introduction of millions of weapons into tense spots around the world has only two inevitable results: millions of deaths; and growing demand for weapons, and thus a vicious cycle is created. This dynamic appears consistent to me whether we are talking about national armies buying tanks, planes, subs, or nukes, or militias and individuals amassing arsenals of assault rifles (real ones-not look-a-likes), RPG’s, .50 cal sniper rifles, and countless other weapons. This trade is inherently destabilizing, as it introduces possibilities to act outside the structures that simply do not exist if the weaponry is not present.
Somehow, someway, the intrnational arms has to be drawn down.

Thanks to Halliburton & KBR, I’m sure some Americans are making a killing selling rape-kits. Spit.

Terry Jones rules.
Check out the series he did with Michael Palin called Ripping Yarns. It’s on DVD now. It was made shortly after Python, and sadly, didn’t get much play in the States. It’s really good.
