The Geneva Treaty of 1980 states that white phosphorous should not be used as a weapon of war in civilian areas. The Gaza strip is about 25 miles long and between 4 and 7.5 miles wide with 1.5 million people, one of the most densely populated regions in the world. Over 900 Palestinians have been killed since fighting began. Half are civilians. And throughout the Israeli air and ground offensive there have been reports that white phosphorous has been used.
Raji Sourani, head of the Palestinian Center for Human Rights told The Electronic Intifada that, “There is no doubt that Israel is using phosphorous bombs over Gaza. Israel is flagrantly violating the Fourth Geneva Convention.”
Human Rights Watch, in a report released on Friday, has confirmed that Israel has used “multiple air-bursts of artillery-fired white phosphorous over Gaza city.” GRITtv speaks to Sarah Leah Whitson of Human Rights Watch on Israel’s use of white phosphorous bombs over Gaza.
