Some of the most outspoken critics of the Israeli occupation are a group of soldiers who have refused to serve in the Israeli Defense Forces because of opposition to Israeli policy. They are known as refuseniks. In the United States, opposition to the war in Iraq has been maintained by Iraq Veterans Against the War and others, like Ann Wright, a retired US Army Colonel who resigned from the State Department in opposition to the war in Iraq.
Today on GRITtv we speak with Wright, Ora Wise, co-founder of the Israel/Palestine Education Project, and from Israel, Haggai Matar a refusenik who has spent several years in prison for refusing to serve. Can the protests mounted throughout the world last weekend be turned into an effective resistance movement?
