Harvey Milk, the first openly-gay man elected to public office in the U.S. in 1977, is the subject of Gus Van Sant's recent film. Milk ran for office at a time when many psychiatrists still called homosexuality a mental illness. Thursday on GRITtv we will discuss Harvey Milk, the recent furor over Prop 8 in California, and the gay rights movement. We'll be joined by Jonathan Ned Katz, author of the Invention of Heterosexuality, educator and poet Pamela Snead, historian Martin Duberman, and documentary filmmaker John Scagliotti. Harvey Milk's most recognized speech, "You Cannot Live On Hope Alone," was given in 1978, shortly before he was assassinated.

The panel will stream at 12 noon eastern right here.
