The opening ceremony in Beijing last week came with all of the predictable criticisms of China's human rights record, its unbreathable air, and suppression of dissent. Remarkably little has been said, however, about China's exploding economy and the gap between the winners and losers of this new economic model, one that combines authoritarian rule with free market ideology.
Naomi Klein, the author of The Shock Doctrine, talks about China's new capitalism with The Real News Senior Editor Paul Jay. Klein argues that the corporate media have been unwilling to talk about the interests that China's new economy are serving. Which might go some way toward explaining why Henry Paulson is in Beijing enjoying the games. Watch part one of Naomi Klein here - check out the rest of Paul Jay's interview at The Real News.
