When you’re deaf it is doubly hard to get the rest of the world to hear you, let alone listen to what you have to say. In See What I’m Saying, Hilari Scarl’s doc in progress, the filmmaker follows four deaf entertainers who, through their brilliance, have found an audience: a comic/producer/actor; a drummer in an all deaf rock band, Beethoven’s Nightmare; one of the country’s top sign language translators who teaches at Juilliard; and a hard of hearing singer who went deaf at the age of 8 and is caught between two worlds as she produces her first CD, “Not Deaf Enough.”

Twelve years ago, Scarl toured with the National Theater of the Deaf and discovered a world of hidden talent. Out of that experience, See What I’m Saying was born.

Scari hopes to release the documentary as the FIRST mainstream open captioned American movie, allowing some 30 million deaf and hard of hearing individuals to see the film in a theatre instead of having to wait for a closed caption DVD. The film is currently in post- production and is looking for distribution. To learn more about the project and sign up for the online newsletter, visit www.seewhatimsayingmovie.com.
